Abstract:
Some life table parameters of colonies of Aphis gossypii were studied in a controlled chamber (25±2°C; 16 h light, 8 h darkness). Colonies showed seasonal physiological variations such that individuals from summer and autumn colonies have shorter life cycles, reproduce 6–7 d after birth, and have higher reproductive ability, compared with spring colonies. Regardless of season, field colonies tend to be ephemeral, reproduce earlier, and have a higher fecundity than glasshouse colonies. Thus the higher infestation rate of A. gossypii in glasshouses might not be a consequence of a high fecundity rate, but a result from a complex interaction of a probable prolonged longevity of individuals and other co-existing factors.
