Abstract:
This paper reports changes in contents of carbohydrates in various organs of Narcissus during growth and development. Mother bulbs of Narcissus cv. Garden Giant stored starch and some polysaccharides as insoluble carbohydrates. Sucrose was the dominant soluble carbohydrate at the planting stage. Increased sucrose and oligosaccharide concentrations in old scales in the period 0-20 weeks after planting (WAP) were correlated with degradation of starch, which was preferentially used for shoot growth. Fructose, glucose and sucrose contents in the shoot increased continuously after shoot sprouting (20 WAP) and reached a maximum at 26 WAP (after flower senescence). A decrease in sugars in the shoot occurred after flower senescence (26 WAP) was related to increases in sucrose and oligosaccharides in the new scales. The new scales acted as sink organs for reserve total carbohydrates at harvest. Carbohydrate concentrations differed among cultivars of narcissi.
