Title: Relationship between leaf micronutrient concentrations and fruit yield in new tomato cultivars

Abstract:
This study was conducted to evaluate the uptake of micronutrients in nine new tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.): ´Corindon`, ´Dombelo`, ´GC-773`, ´GC-775`, ´Nancy`, ´Noa`, ´Sarky`, ´Yunque` and ´Volcani`, and in two advanced breeding lines, ´617/83` and ´2084/81`, compared to cultivar ´Búfalo`, a widely cultivated variety. Plants were grown in a greenhouse and the influence of genotype on micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Cl) utilisation and on the biochemical indicators, catalase and peroxidase, were evaluated. The cultivar with the best marketable yield (´Sarky`) did not have the highest concentrations of micronutrients. Cultivars with greater foliar fresh weight (´Volcani` and ´GC-773`), or cultivars with higher concentrations of micronutrients (i.e., Fe, Zn and Cl in ´2084/81`; Mn, Zn, Cu and Cl in ´Nancy`, ´GC-773` and ´GC-775`) had higher levels of non-marketable fruit than did cultivars ´Corindon` and ´Dombelo` with higher marketable and total fruit yield and with low micronutrient contents in their leaves. In this experiment, element status correlated with the biochemical indicators (catalase and peroxidase) and with fruit yield in greenhouse-grown tomatoes, but the enzymatic methods used to establish the nutritional status of plants in this experiment did not, by themselves, prove sufficiently informative.
