Author: DR. L.J.C. AUTREY
pp: 1-2
Abstract:
The sugar industry of Mauritius is at a crossroads. The proposed 36% reduction in the preferential price of sugar (from €523.70 to €335.17 tonne-1), accorded under the ACP-EU Sugar Protocol embodied in the Lomé Convention of 1975, will necessitate a profound reform of the industry if it is to survive. However, the industry has shown remarkable resilience to changing times and has operated in the past without the protective net of the Protocol.
