Title:
Guest Editorial: Whither or Wither Horticulture? Horticultural R&D in the Modern Era

Author:
PROFESSOR JOHN R. HILLMAN

pp: 317-318

Abstract:
This article is being published at a time when the five basic freedoms that should provide the bedrock of modern western democracies are under threat, largely through short-sighted, invertebrate political decision-making. I do not want to be regarded as a polemicist - yet free expression encompassing speech, press, religion, and assembly; the free movement of goods, labour, capital, and services; freedom and personal security under the rule of law, connected properly to justice; freedom from excessive power of the state; and freedom arising from adequate defence of the state, are all either contested or neglected. All impact, to varying degrees, on research in general and on horticultural research and biotechnology, specifically.
