Abstract:
Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer roots are highly prized in international markets for their medicinal properties. The present study focussed on the enhanced production of the bioactive anti-cancer protopanaxatriol group of ginsenosides in adventitious roots of P. ginseng in bioreactor cultures by feeding the biogenetic precursor, squalene. HPLC-MS analysis of the saponin fraction indicated higher accumulation of the protopanaxatriol group of ginsenosides (Rg1 0.96 mg g-1, Rg2 0.09 mg g-1 and Re 1.91 mg g-1 DW) in 40 d-old squalene-fed adventitious roots compared to controls. The results allow predictions of the biosynthetic pathway from squalene to ginsenosides in adventitious roots.
