Abstract:
White and Broadley (2005; hereafter referred to as W&B) tested the hypothesis that mineral concentrations in fruits, vegetables and nuts have declined since the 1930s, using data from the UK and the USA. As in similar studies (Mayer, 1997; Davis et al., 2004), they analysed ratios of nutrient contents, R = recent/old. Using t-tests on loge-transformed R, they tested the null hypothesis that loge(R) = 0, equivalent to testing the null hypothesis that the geometric mean of R = 1.
