Abstract:
Thirteen simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were used to screen a collection of Vitis vinifera cultivar ´Tintilia` harvested in Southern Italy and in Spain, as well as other cultivars similar in name and/or in morphological and agronomic characteristics, in order to determine their genetic diversity and relationships. Genetic distances between the 37 accessions analysed have been established showing a close relationship between the Sardinian and Spanish cultivars analysed. Results showed a perfect identity between accessions named ´Tintilia` from Molise, which differed from ´Tintilia` from other Italian regions and from Spain. Furthermore, the molecular data demonstrated that ´Tintilia` and ´Bovale grande` were different varieties, even though they have been reported in the “Vitis International Variety Catalogue” as being identical. The results were compared with a data-set of autochthonous grapes from Campania, confirming the genetic uniqueness of ´Tintilia` towards cultivars from the surrounding area. This work confirms the general applicability of SSR analysis for resolving problems of taxonomic identity.
