Abstract:
The therapeutic power of gardening has been recognised for centuries.
From the apothecary's use of herbs and flowers, through to the era of modern drug development, the medicinal benefits of plant-derived compounds have been highly prized.
There are also many health benefits from the practice of horticulture and gardening, from the healing power of specially designed sensory gardens, to the physical benefits from everyday gardening.
Horticulture also plays a valuable part in the care of patients in modern medical settings such as hospitals and in caring environments for people living with dementia.
There is a growing body of scientific literature proving that gardening is good for health, helping to heal mind, body and soul.
